Today I am offering this charming vintage Takahashi San Francisco ceramic red fox trinket box, sometimes also referred to as a pill box.
It's a great size for storing tiny treasures or little heirloom keepsakes.
Made in Japan during the later mid-century era, this highly collectible piece features an alert, upright orange-auburn red fox perched on a square lid with a cream-colored crackle glaze finish.
The lower hollow box section is coated in a rich, dark brown glaze accented with metallic gold pinstripe bands.
The base underside retains its original, crisp round gold foil label reading "Takahashi® MADE IN JAPAN • SAN FRANCISCO 94103".
The original owner attached felt pads so as not to scratch the surface of furniture.
You can carefully remove them without damaging the piece if you choose to do so.
The piece measures approximately as follows:
- 4¼" tall - total of both sections
- 2" square in each side of the base box
- 2½" tall for the fox alone
It is in excellent vintage pre-owned condition with beautiful glaze coverage, bright colors, and no chips, cracks, or repairs.
The crazing (surface crackling) across the fox and lid is intentional. It was made that way to give the piece an authentic antique inspired retro character.
