Alexander William George Duff, 1st Duke of Fife (1849–1912) — ALS, autograph letter signed “Fife”, 2p on 4p lettersheet, written from 4 Cavendish Square, W., 19 July (1880s hand), addressed to Dr Ramsay, a West End physician. Fife explains that he has no control over invitations to the Bachelor’s Ball, being only a subscriber, and reports that the Committee “informed me last week” that they have closed their list and will issue no further invitations “on account of not crowding the Princess of Wales.” A concise and characteristic piece of London Season social correspondence, reflecting the pressure placed on guest lists when royalty was expected to attend.
