Southern Highlands Mendi Valley War ShieldA Monumental Carved Wooden Shield from Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea | Southern Highlands Province | Mendi Valley
Mendi Peoples | 20th Century, Attributed

LY Brothers Fine Art
Selected Antiquities, Oceanic & Ethnographic Works of Art

An impressive large-scale wooden war shield from the Mendi Valley region of Papua New Guinea's Southern Highlands, distinguished by its elongated sculptural form, richly darkened surface, and remarkable hand-carved texture.

Standing 47 inches tall, the shield presents a commanding vertical silhouette with softly rounded ends, a gently convex face, and a subtle central ridge. Its substantial proportions reflect the distinctive shield-making traditions of the New Guinea Highlands.

Carved from a solid piece of wood, the surface retains extensive evidence of hand-tool workmanship, with overlapping adze marks creating an intricate, almost rhythmic pattern across the face.

The shield exhibits a deep brown to nearly black patina, interrupted by subtle reddish undertones and scattered traces of earlier painted decoration. Remnants of geometric designs, including triangular motifs and yellow chevron-like elements, have been reported, although much of the original decoration has faded into the richly weathered surface.

The interplay of dark coloration, carved texture, and restrained geometry gives the object an exceptionally strong sculptural presence.

The reverse is reported to retain a carrying handle secured through the body of the shield, reflecting its original construction as a defensive implement.

The shield's elegant proportions and heavily worked surface transform a traditional object of warfare into a compelling example of Oceanic sculptural art.

Historical and Cultural Context

The peoples of Papua New Guinea's Southern Highlands developed distinctive traditions of shield-making associated with warfare, ceremonial display, and expressions of individual and community identity.

Among the Mendi and neighboring Highland communities, shields were important pieces of defensive equipment used during armed confrontations involving spears, arrows, and other traditional weapons.

Their substantial wooden construction provided protection, while their painted and carved surfaces created powerful visual impressions.

Traditional shield decoration frequently incorporated geometric patterns, contrasting mineral pigments, and symbolic motifs associated with the identities and artistic traditions of their makers.

As patterns of intercommunity conflict changed during the twentieth century, shields also continued to appear in ceremonial gatherings, public performances, and cultural displays.

The elongated form and restrained decoration of this example reflect the distinctive sculptural qualities associated with Southern Highlands shield traditions.

Today, these shields are appreciated not only for their ethnographic importance but also for their powerful abstract compositions, architectural silhouettes, and expressive surfaces.

Gallery Commentary

This exceptional shield is particularly distinguished by the strength of its silhouette and the extraordinary texture of its carved wooden surface.

The dark, richly weathered face reveals a remarkable interplay of overlapping tool marks, subtle pigment remnants, and irregular passages of reddish-brown coloration.

Its elongated proportions and restrained form establish an almost architectural presence, while the hand-worked surface gives the shield a distinctly expressive, tactile quality.

At nearly four feet tall, the work possesses considerable visual impact and can be appreciated equally as a historic ethnographic object and as a powerful example of abstract wooden sculpture.

The reported New York collecting history dating to approximately 1980, together with its subsequent association with Todd Zieseniss of Tribal Gatherings, adds further interest.

An attractive acquisition for collectors of Oceanic art, Papua New Guinea ethnographic material, and traditional sculptural works.
